This simple bench, designed by Keiji Ashizawa, was the very first product that came out of the Ishinomaki Laboratory workshops - a collaboration between students from the Ishinomaki Technical High School and designers at Ishinomaki Laboratory for a temporary outdoor cinema, the benches have been utilised by the community ever since.
Made from locally sourced wood that is both hardwearing and weather resistant the benches work equally well on a terrace as they do at a dining table.

Ishinomaki Laboratory
Founded in 2011 in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY was established to support the recovery of Ishinomaki City. Led by architect Keiji Ashizawa, a team of passionate designers collected repair tools and timber to create a public DIY space, encouraging community creativity and self-reliance. They later expanded into designing and producing furniture, launching the brand “Ishinomaki Koubou,” which promotes handmade craftsmanship both locally and internationally.
