The Ishinomaki Stool was specially designed through a series of furniture-making workshops involving local residents and primary school students, in collaboration with the U.S. furniture company Herman Miller. The Ishinomaki Laboratory team identified a need for a step stool to access high storage and a shoe-changing seat near home entrances in temporary housing. Observing that residents often repurposed plastic beer cases for various uses, the team was inspired by their ingenuity to create the compact and lightweight Ishinomaki Stool.
Ishinomaki Laboratory
Founded in 2011 in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY was established to support the recovery of Ishinomaki City. Led by architect Keiji Ashizawa, a team of passionate designers collected repair tools and timber to create a public DIY space, encouraging community creativity and self-reliance. They later expanded into designing and producing furniture, launching the brand “Ishinomaki Koubou,” which promotes handmade craftsmanship both locally and internationally.
