The album highlights the exceptional compositional and playing skills of Makoto Terashita, who wrote five of the six tracks, alongside the confident, expressive tones of Harold Land, a respected US saxophonist who performed with leading figures of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, including Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Gerald Wilson, and Bobby Hutcherson.

By the time he recorded with Terashita in 1983, Harold Land was in his mid-50s with a long list of credits, including around twelve albums as a leader. In contrast, Terashita was in his early 30s with just one release to his name—his acclaimed 1978 debut Great Harvest. Despite the difference in experience, their creative connection is clear throughout the session.

Topology opens with ‘Dragon Dance’, an epic spiritual jazz piece introduced by an extended solo piano from Terashita. The intensity of Terashita’s compositions, including ‘Dragon Dance’ and the driving bop of ‘Crossing’, is balanced by more reflective moments such as Land’s ‘World Peace’. Altogether, the album offers a complete and engaging meeting of two musicians from different generations and backgrounds, united in musical spirit.
