V/A - TV, Anime & Manga New Age Soundtracks 1984-1993

This compilation explores the experimental sound of Japanese TV and anime soundtracks from 1984–1993, a period shaped by composers like Yas-Kaz, whose study of Balinese gamelan helped redefine rhythm and texture in Japan’s emerging new age scene. As the anime industry boomed, studios such as Studio Ghibli gave composers greater freedom to blend electronic and acoustic elements with global influences.

Across eight tracks, the collection brings together classics and rare gems, including Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s “Kaneda” from Akira, alongside works by Norihiro Tsuru, Yoichiro Yoshikawa, and more. Rich in percussion and atmosphere, these recordings capture a moment when soundtracks played a key role in shaping Japan’s distinctive new age sound.
