While Kraftwerk was emerging in Europe - becoming a major influence and inspiration - Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) stayed true to their own unique sound.

Formed in 1978, the Japanese electro-pop outfit features the legendary Haruomi Hosono on bass, also known for producing the timeless and mind-bending Hosono House. Solid State Survivor, the band’s second album, was released in 1979 and, although it was released before the start of the '80s, it already contains remnants of electronic dance music as we know it today.

YMO's second album Solid State Survivor was released in 1979 and features crossover tracks spanning techno and new wave. It is probably the most sampled YMO album, with numerous artists covering 'Behind The Mask' over the years. The album helped trigger a social phenomenon and the rise of the techno-pop boom.
