Kihon no Utsuwa

Recycling discarded tableware addresses raw material depletion. Tono's recycled clay range, made from crushed household tableware, offer a sustainable alternative to landfill disposal. "Kihon no Utsuwa" was created to showcase Tono tableware's unique charm, leading to new products with recycled soil.

Recycled soil is made by blending crushed tableware with over 20% new soil, demonstrating Tono's advanced techniques. With only five of 60 mines left in Gifu Prefecture, Tono now sources soil from other regions. The Green Life 21 Project (GL21), launched in 1997, promotes ceramic recycling, and Maruasa Pottery uses recycled soil from discarded tableware across the country, emphasizing genuine household recycling.

After years of limited interest, Maruasa began producing tableware from recycled soil in 2021, driven by growing environmental awareness. Matsubara, the representative of Maruasa Pottery urges consumers to care for their tableware, as recycling is ineffective if items are too dirty. He hopes people will embrace pottery's natural imperfections.
