J Jazz Vol. 4 - Deep Modern Jazz from Japan (Nippon Columbia 1968 -1981)

Drawing from the Nippon Columbia catalogue, the selection features major figures including Takeo Moriyama, Hiromasa Suzuki, Fumio Itabashi, Masahiko Satoh, Kazumi Watanabe and Kiyoshi Sugimoto, alongside influential big band leaders Nobuo Hara and Toshiyuki Miyama.

The recordings move between deep bass grooves, electric piano and synthesizer-led fusion, expansive ensemble arrangements and exploratory modal passages. Highlights include Jiro Inagaki’s psychedelic modal blues, Takashi Mizuhashi’s samba fusion featuring Herbie Hancock, Shigeharu Mukai’s fusion funk and Mikio Masuda’s driving keyboard work.

Bringing together established names, lesser-known artists and deep catalogue discoveries, J Jazz Volume 4 documents the breadth and energy of Japan’s jazz scene during one of its most adventurous periods.
