Born in Tokyo in 1932, Kiyoshi Yamaya began his career in 1953 playing in local jazz bands. He later joined Nobuo Hara’s Sharps & Flats as a baritone saxophonist, where he also worked as a composer and arranger. In the 1960s, he became an important figure in Japanese jazz, working alongside Norio Maeda and Keitaro Miho to improve jazz composition in Japan. In the 1970s, his Contemporary Sound Orchestra blended jazz-funk with traditional Japanese instruments like shakuhachi, koto, biwa, and shamisen. These recordings were released on Denon and Nippon Columbia.

Toshiko Yonekawa, born in 1913 in Himeji, learned koto and shamisen from her father from the age of three. She gave her first concert at eight and appeared on national radio at twelve. Known for her precise and expressive playing, she became one of Japan’s most respected traditional musicians and was named a Living National Treasure in 1996.

Born in Tokyo in 1950, Kifu Mitsuhashi is a leading shakuhachi player. After training at NHK’s Hōgaku Program, he joined Pro Musica Nipponia and performed traditional and contemporary works worldwide. He has appeared with major orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Berliner Philharmoniker, and received the Order of the Rising Sun in 2020.
