tokyobike partnered with Moonstar to produce a take on their classic Minima Shoe design – using the same vulcanisation process but with canvas instead of suede to create a light, everyday shoe perfect for on and off the bike.
Whilst the shoes are ‘mass produced’ there is an unusual level of craft and skill that goes into the manufacturing process and a beauty in the pride and dedication that the makers exude.
Founded in Kurume, Japan in 1873, MoonStar started out producing Tabi (sock-like footwear with a rubber sole for workers). They are better known today for their classic plimsolls produced under the brand ‘Shoes Like Pottery’ – a reference to the manufacturing process which has similarities to the way ceramics are produced. The soles are fired in a kiln for a smooth but tough finish while the canvas comes from Kurume cloth produced on hand looms that give a unique texture.
Moonstar x tokyobike shoes are sold exclusively through a small number of tokyobike stores and are strictly limited to 50 pairs* in the following colours: off white, blue and grey (men’s and women’s sizes).
