Ryuichi Sakamoto's classic LP Ongaku Zukan, originally issued in Japan on his own School label in 1984. The early 1980s marked an important period for Ryuichi Sakamoto. Following the international success of the Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence soundtrack (1983), and a pause in activity with Yellow Magic Orchestra after their album Naughty Boys, he began work on his fourth solo record.
Recorded at Tokyo’s Onkyo Haus Studio, Ongaku Zukan (“Musical Encyclopedia”) features contributions from collaborators including Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, Yasuaki Shimizu, Tatsuro Yamashita, and Toshinori Kondo.
Working without a fixed concept, Sakamoto recorded around 30 tracks in 1983, later shaping them into a full album using the Fairlight CMI sampler to explore new electronic sound textures.
This release presents the original 1984 Japanese edition for the first time internationally, featuring remastered audio and faithfully reproduced artwork, celebrating one of contemporary music’s true innovators.
