Moving freely between free jazz, post-bop, and heavy, driving grooves, Free Fight balances raw energy with focused composition. Hayasaka’s saxophone playing is muscular and inventive, while her writing keeps the music restless, varied, and tightly unified—an album that rewards close listening while retaining strong physical impact.

Originally released on Mobys, the record reflects the label’s adventurous spirit. Founded by critic and promoter Teruto Soejima, Mobys issued a small but influential catalogue from Japan’s free and open jazz scene. Hayasaka’s debut sits naturally within it, sharing its spirit of risk and individuality.

Born in Tokyo in 1960, Hayasaka immersed herself in the city’s jazz culture, studying saxophone and performing widely while drawing influence from players such as Roland Kirk, David Murray, and Ornette Coleman. Her career has since spanned Japan, Europe, and New York, but Free Fight remains a powerful statement of her early vision.
