Urushi
Lacquerware, so closely associated with Japan, is a craft we have showcased previously at tokyobike, most notably during London Craft Week where we exhibited an Urushi lacquered bike. With new product lines added incorporating Urushi, including tableware and beautiful chopsticks, we take another look at the skills and artistry inherent to the craft.
Urushi is a type of lacquer made from the sap of the urushi tree, native to Japan and the surrounding countries. This traditional Japanese lacquer is highly prized for its durability and the unique depth and beauty of the finish. The lacquer is applied in multiple layers and allowed to dry and harden between each layer, a process which can take several months to complete and requires a high level of skill and expertise. The finished product is a smooth and glossy surface that is resistant to water, heat, and chemicals.
The project featured above and showcased at tokyobike London for LCW illustrates how the technique can be applied to different surfaces, including a bike frame! A total of 4 bikes were commissioned for the Kengo Kuma designed Ace Hotel in Kyoto and we were fortunate to receive one bike which is available to purchase by contacting the store.
